What is the Webster Technique?
The Webster Technique was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). It is a gentle, non-invasive method aimed at reducing the effects of sacral subluxation and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. This just means optimising the pelvic alignment and function, which is important to maintain for expectant mothers during pregnancy. It focuses on addressing the balance and alignment of the pelvis, which can have a significant impact on both maternal comfort and fetal positioning.
How Does Pregnancy Chiropractic Work?
The Webster Technique involves a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment of the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine) and the surrounding muscles and ligaments. This assessment helps the chiropractor identify any imbalances or restrictions that may be affecting pelvic function.
Using gentle, precise adjustments, the chiropractor corrects any misalignments in the sacrum. These adjustments are performed with the patient lying on a specially designed pregnancy table or using pregnancy pillows to ensure comfort and safety.
In addition to the adjustment, the chiropractor may perform gentle soft tissue work on the round ligaments and other supporting structures of the pelvis. This helps release tension and improve overall pelvic function. Finally, the chiropractor reassesses the pelvic alignment to ensure that the adjustment has been effective and to determine if further care is needed.
Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, your body undergoes significant changes that can lead to discomfort and pain. As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts, putting additional strain on your spine and joints. Hormonal changes can also cause ligaments to loosen, making your body more susceptible to misalignments and pain. Chiropractic care can help address these issues.
Back Pain During Pregnancy
Gentle adjustments can alleviate the common aches and pains associated with pregnancy, including lower back pain, sciatica, and pelvic discomfort.
Improving Posture
As your body adapts to the growing baby, maintaining proper posture becomes challenging. Chiropractic care helps correct posture and prevent long-term issues.
Stronger for Your Labour
A balanced pelvis allows for more room for the baby to move into an optimal position for birth. This can reduce the likelihood of breech presentation and other malpositions, potentially leading to a smoother labor and delivery process.
Optimal Fetal Positioning
Chiropractic care can help ensure your pelvis is properly aligned, which may contribute to a smoother, more natural labour and delivery process.
Safety and Effectiveness for Pregnancy
The Webster Technique is considered safe and effective for pregnant women. Chiropractors who perform this technique receive specialized training to ensure that the adjustments are performed gently and safely, with careful consideration of the unique needs of pregnant women.
